Preppy Princess Lilly Giveaway

Head over to the Preppy Princess and enter her Lilly Stationery giveaway. She is giving away a Latte Da! mug and a Take Note Mouse Pad, both in Cabanarama. The drawing will take place next Wednesday, March 3.
It's been raining here for over 24 hours. Yesterday it rained hard. We had thunder, lightening, hail and a tornado. Today we have more rain and tonight after 10:00, it's suppose to start snowing. They have predicted 1"-3". We'll see.

For all of you "Are You Being Served?" fans, I wanted to let you know that Wendy Richard (Miss Brahms) passed away Thursday. Here is the obituary. Thanks to Toad for posting this yesterday.

We had an offer on the store. We are not accepting it. It is lower than what we will settle for. Maybe they will make another offer.

Thursday, 26 February 2009

Thanks for the comments about my boss leaving. I felt better about it today. I was over the initial shock. This afternoon when coworker and I told Queenie, I almost started crying. Several people have asked me if my boss asked me to go with him. No, he hasn't. I'm not going to hold my breath. It might be a good move, but I've been where I am for 16 years. I have my seniority, my benefits and my vacation time. If he makes me an offer that I can't refuse, I'll go. That is, if he asks me. Since I have decided what it will take to leave, he won't ask.

This morning, BFF emailed me to ask me if I wanted to go see Sixteen Candles at the Alabama Theatre. I told her that I would have to pass because I had so much to do tonight. She tried all day to talk me into it. She would not take no for an answer. I don't know what was wrong with her. Finally, I told her point blank that I would have to pass. I hope she's not mad. This afternoon, she said that they had a meeting at work and it did not go well. I told her that if she needed to talk, to feel free to call me tonight. She said, "I'll be at the movies." Oh, well. She'll get over it.

I stopped by Barnes and Noble to buy Social Climbers by Beth Dunn. They didn't have it in stock. Instead I bought High Tea by Sandra Harper. I heard about it on Preppy Sue's blog.

Today, I learned that Wasp 101 and The Preppy Pauper are closing down their blogs. They will be missed.
I was sick yesterday with a horrible sinus headache. I have not had a headache that bad in a long time. I could not even hold my head up. I was okay when I left for work, but when I got there it was pounding. I took two sinus tablets and it did not even phase it. I went home about 9:30. When I got home, I went back to bed and slept for 3 hours. I still didn't feel that great. I just laid around and watched TV for the remainder of the day.

This morning, I felt about 85%. When I got to work, my boss called me into his office and closed the door. I have noticed him doing this with others. I figured that he was getting a good promotion or we were buying a bank. No, he told me that he was leaving the bank. I didn't know how to react. I want to break down and cry. I've been working for him for about 14 years. When I see his family, we always hug. I have been on the verge of tears all day. He told me that it would not be announced until Friday. I took it that I was not supposed to say anything. I did tell coworker and she was stunned. I told her not to mention it. She said that it explained some weird things around the office that she had noticed. He is one of the best managers that I've ever had. He is a graduate of Princeton and has an MBA from Wharton. He treats me like I'm smarter that him. Even though he comes from a privileged background and is an Ivy Leaguer, he is very down to earth. He does not think he is better or smarter than anybody. I almost feel like there's been a death.

On a good note, The Pink Pelican now has a blog. Check it out.

Tucker Blair Giveaway

Her Southern Charm is having a Tucker Blair giveaway. The rules are posted on her blog. Head over there and enter to win.
I hope everyone had a good weekend. Mine was nice.

Yesterday, my mother and I had to keep the nursery at church. Those kids were "hell on wheels". That was the longest 30 minutes of my life. Friday, they were predicting ice and snow for Saturday night and Sunday morning. I was keeping my fingers crossed. I was hoping that bad weather would keep the little "angels" at home, but they took the ice and snow out of the forecast. At least we didn't have a wrestling match like they did the week before.

Is anyone familiar with lodging in the Nashville area? I have to plan a meeting that is to be held in Nashville. In the past, we have had it at the Guesthouse Suites over by the Opryland, but it is not very convenient. I was thinking about Brentwood/Franklin area. Maybe something comparable to a Hampton Inn. Has anyone had any experiences or know of someone who has? I would appreciate any imput.

Saturday, 21 February 2009

The other day I asked if any one has any questions, they can ask. I only had two questions. I must be an open book.

1. Preppy Princess asked "Do you still drink TaB and is it hard to find?" Yes, I do. Occasionally, I will buy Diet Pepsi or Diet Dr. Pepper if it is on sale and TaB is not. I usually find TaB at Publix, Walmart and occasionally at Target.

2. Milk and Cookeez asked "What kind of store do you work at?" Our family owns a liquor store. We sell liquor, beer, wine and cigarettes.
I hope everyone is having a nice weekend. It is beautiful here, but it is a bit chilly. It is suppose to start raining later this afternoon and then turn to snow in the night. I wouldn't mind waking up to snow in the morning. My mother and I have to keep the nursery at church tomorrow. Maybe the snow will keep some of the children at home. Probably not.

We have a couple that are interested in buying the store. I hope they want to pay what we are asking. We haven't told anyone yet. We don't want to "count our chickens before they hatch". I hate to do it to our customers, but my mother, sister and I need to get a life. My mother is down her almost every day. I'm here on most Saturdays. It is hard to make plans. The only time that we have to run errands is Saturday after 2:00 and on Sunday. A lot of the places that we like to shop are closed on Sunday. My mother likes to travel. If we sell, she can travel and not have to worry about the store. Keep your fingers crossed for us.

Thursday, 19 February 2009

The weather did not get as bad as they had predicted. I was afraid that we were in for some bad storms. It was 75 yesterday afternoon and now it is in the 30's. Crazy Alabama weather.

Tonight when I was in Publix, I ran into a former coworker. She stopped to talk. She asked me about different people that we used to work with. Some of them I never did like. Some I thought that she didn't like. Oh well. It was really good to see her. This former coworker is so sweet and has the sweetest Southern drawl.

I hope everyone has a good Friday.

Wednesday, 18 February 2009

This evening is being spent dodging tornadoes (no excuse me, tornadic activity). We are between storms right now. It's in the mid 70's right now and it is supposed to get down into the 30's tonight. That means lots of storms when the temperatures start to drop.

What's up with The Vermont Country Store? So now I can buy sex toys to go with my Lanz flannel night gown. What's this world coming to?

Tuesday, 17 February 2009

I hope that everyone had a great weekend. I did, except for Monday. I had a horrible sinus headache all day and it finally went away about 8:30 pm.

Saturday, my mother and I rearranged her day room so that she could put her new filing cabinet/credenza in there. She is so proud of it. She played with it all weekend.

Sunday, after church, we called her friend that is recovering from a broken hip to see if she wanted to go to Guntersville with us for lunch. We just wanted to go somewhere. After we got back, we walked and then settled down and watched TV.

Yesterday was a wasted day. As I said before, I had a horrible sinus headache. I am much better today, except my weather foot is hurting. I think we are supposed to have thunderstorms tonight and tomorrow. I'm sure you love hearing about my aches and pains.

This morning, I fixed a beautiful salad for lunch. I went to get me something to drink out of the refrigerator about 11:00 and my drink was frozen. I checked my salad. Not only was it frozen, but so was my salad dressing. Someone had turned the refrigerato up real high. They better not let me find out who they are. I had to go across the street and get something for lunch. I check my salad and dressing about 4:00. Both were thawed. I hope it's okay tomorrow, because I plan to eat it then.

Brit Coms

Everybody has been posting about Brit Coms lately. If you don't know what I'm talking about, then you have missed out. Brit Coms are British comedies that air on PBS. In Alabama, they air on Saturday nights. Since my father always worked in nice department stores, we have been huge fans of "Are You Being Served?" for many years. I also watch "Keeping Up Appearances" with Hyacinth Bucket (pronounced as "Bouquet") and her sisters Rose, Daisy and Violet. "To The Manor Born" tops off the evening. I used to watch "May to December", but it has not been on in years. I noticed on www.tvblinkx.com, they have several Brit Coms, plus "Coronation Street", which was a long running British soap. I haven't watched it yet. Maybe in a few weeks.
HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY!!

I hope everyone is having a good Saturday so far. We've started closing the store an hour earlier on Friday and Saturday nights. I get an extra hour of sleep on Friday nights. I feel better on Saturdays.

I told y'all about the woman that works at the store during the day. We've suspected her of stealing. We figured out how she was doing it. She would ring up a customer's purchase and instead of hitting total she would hit ALL VOID, then take the cash. My mother came up with a plan to make everyone, including her and me, log all of our ALL VOID transactions, plus the reason. She told them that her accountant was requiring it. Maybe that will halt it without having to say anything to her. We've known the woman since she was a teenager. When she was in school, she was bad news. She ran away from home and went to Atlanta and was practically living off the streets. She made a deal, if she could get home, she would listen to her mother and staighten out her life. She did and she is trying to make sure that her son does not end up like she was. My father was so proud of how she had done. It would kill him to know that we suspected her of stealing. She was so good to him...and him to her. We think she may have bben having money problems. We didn't want to confront her, because we were afraid that she would walk out. We really need her (and I think she knows it). She orders everything. She knows how to negotiate with vendors. She gets us the best prices that are available.

Yesterday, Queenie's husband came to work and started hauling off the things that she had purchased from the vacant floor. She bought 8 filing cabinets. Not just the two-drawer and four-drawer, but big lateral filing cabinets like that is used in a file room. He worked several hours taking them out. The maintenance man said that she took everything but the carpet. I was able to get my mother a nice small credenza type filing cabinet with a cherry finish. It was the only one left...Queenie got the others. I also got BFF a filing cabinet and a bookcase and table for me. Yes, I got my table that I was telling about earlier. A woman on another floor said that she could refinish it for me. When I asked her how much she would charge me, she said, "Not a thing". Can't beat free. I'm going to discreetly find out what she drinks and get her the premium brand. For some reason, I think she drinks bourbon. If that's the case, I may get her a big bottle of Woodford Reserve. I wasn't going to refinish the table. I was going to clean it up and cover the top with a table runner. I'm still going to have to get something to cover the top. I plan to put my TV and DVR on it, and I don't want to ruin the top. Maybe, I can find some clear vinyl or some cute vinyl placemats at Target. I wish I had bought some Cynthia Rowley placemats last summer, but who knew?

I hope everyone enjoys the remainder of your weekend.

They are doing renovations on one of the floors at the bank where I work. They have a huge dumpster that sits behind the bank. Today, I left work a few minutes early. As I was going down the street behind the bank, I looked up and saw Queenie's husband parked near the dumpster. He was closing the gate on the back of their van. Then he headed back towards the dumpster. I assume that he had been dumpster diving.

A lot of you have done this, I guess I'll join in. If there's any questions that you would like to ask me, go ahead. I'll answer your questions. I'm having a hard time lately coming up with something to post about. Maybe your questions will help me come up with something to post about.

Have a good Friday.

Wednesday, 11 February 2009

So much for the bad storms. It rained a steady rain for about 15 minutes and as soon as it moved out, the sun came out.

Today, we got an email that all the leftover furniture on the 8th floor was up for grabs. If a department didn't need it for business purposes, then the employees can purchase it for $25 for each piece. I have my name on a table, bookcase and wood file cabinet. I was trying not to be a vulture, but I want the table for a TV table and the bookcase for my home office area. The file cabinet if for BFF. Coworker and I laughed at Queenie. She was up there putting her name on tons of stuff. She even put in a call to her good for nothing husband to see if he wanted to come and have a look see at the stuff. What a vulture. Like they need more stuff.
If any of y'all had bad weather last night, I hope everything is okay. Today is our turn. We are expecting 25-35 mph winds with gusts of 45-50 mph, plus lots of rain. And it's 60 degrees right now at 5:15 am. This is like April and it's only February 11. They are predicting the storms to be out of here by 2:00 this afternoon. I hope it doesn't get too bad. On the bright side, tomorrow is supposed to be sunny.

Monday, 9 February 2009

The other day, Tickled Pink and Green had a post about an episode of Oprah. The episode was about what Hormone Therapy. This is what doctors are saying about the episode. Unless my doctor advises it, I don't think I'm going to take HT. Now if I turn into the biggest BITCH this side of the Mississippi, I may consider it.

I came home tonight and rushed to get everything done so that I could watch Gossip Girl...and it's a rerun. I think Two and a Half Men is a new episode.

I should probably stop. I think I am starting to ramble.

Everyone have a great Tuesday!
Wander over to The Preppy Princess. She's hosting a Lilly Pulitzer stationary give-a-way. She has the rules posted on her blog.

Sunday, 8 February 2009

Today was a nice relaxing day. I caught up with blogs and washed seven loads of clothes. After lunch, I went to Target to get some purple KoolAid (sugar-free, of course). While at Target, I bought a pink and green door mat. They only had one left and it was on clearance. I have a small space just inside my front door and I wanted a cheerful mat. I can't get used to the burst of color.

I think I'm going to go to bed early tonight. I usually have a hard time getting to sleep on Sunday night, but tonight I'm sleepy.

Have a good Monday.

Saturday, 7 February 2009

I had to work at a bingo fundraiser today. It was a lot of fun, but also a lot of work. I got there 2 hours before it started to help put desserts on trays. Somehow, another lady and I ended up doing all the work. Not only did we have to help with desserts, we had to serve, hand out prizes and clean up afterwards. Some lady sliced a ham and left the bones and scraps laying on a table. She never made the effort to clean it up, even after someone asked her if she wanted the bone and what ham was on it. I won two games. I won a book and a gift box with jams, tea and jam pot. The jam gift set may be donated to next year's bingo fundraiser. There was also a silent auction during all this. I bought a cookbook and a ruby teadrop pendant. I stopped by Barnes and Noble on the way home. When I got home, I laid down on the sofa and slept for about 30 minutes.

I think I may watch TV for the remainder of the evening. I'm exhausted.

Thursday, 5 February 2009

Today was a quiet day at work and tomorrow promises to be even quieter. I hate days like this. They seem to drag.

I went to a meeting of my women's club after work. We are having a bingo fundraiser at a Catholic church on Saturday (that's the only place where you can play bingo, apparently it's a sin at other churches). There was a new woman there that tried to suggest that we change something. She got knocked down real quick. I think she got her nose out of joint. Oh well, she'll get over it. You would not believe her outfit. She had on red pants and jacket, a red and white blouse, red high heel boots with pointy toes, big red earrings, rings on every finger and a red bucket hat. She never took off the hat. I never could figure out why she had it on. It wasn't raining outside, it was sunny. And it was 49 degrees outside. I guess she thought she was chic in it. I think she may be someone that has to show off how much money she has. She has donated a lot of stuff for the bingo, but I don't feel like it is out of the goodness of her heart. I think she wants us to see that she can afford to.

Today, at work, we heard sirens outside. Of course, we had our noses pressed up against the window. Across the street, there were 4-5 fire trucks, 2 ambulances, 3 police cars and representatives from 2 TV stations. I emailed a friend that worked across the street. She said that someone in the next building was drilling grommets and there was some smoke that set off alarms. Why so many fire trucks? The firemen got out of their trucks in full uniforms and got out all of their equipment and axes. One good thing, the fireman were nice to look at. At least we were entertained for about 30 minutes.

Tuesday, 3 February 2009

Queenie was out sick yesterday. I'm assuming it was a digestive ailment. She claims that she ate some mayo that was in the fridge at work that was bad. She said that she didn't see a date on it, but ate it anyway. If I can't find a date on something like mayo or salad dressing, I don't eat it. She was also bragging about finishing a blanket that she was crocheting. She was supposed to be real sick.

Has anyone ever bought Eastland penny loafers? I am thinking of ordering a pair. I have narrow feet and the Bass does not come in narrow widths, but the Eastlands do. They look almost like the Bass Weejuns that I wore in college. Also, spring will be here before you know it, especially here in the South. I need some shopping advice. I like straight skirts that are about 30". I have a few from LL Bean, but they don't carry them any more. Does any one know of a brand that does? Also, I like the straight shifts. Any besides Lilly Pulitzer?

Monday, 2 February 2009

I hope everyone had a good weekend. Mine was pretty good. I went to Huntsville Saturday. I didn't make any interesting purchases.

Yesterday, I watched the Super Bowl. I'm glad that the Steelers won. I thought Jennifer Hudson did a great job on the Star Spangled Banner.

There is a floor in our building that was recently vacated. There's a table up there that I want. It has a cherry finish and Queen Anne style legs. The top is scratched and dirty, but the front and legs are in good shape. I want to bring it home to use as a TV table. I figure that I can clean it and then put a table runner over the top. I asked Queenie's boss and he referred me to a lady that handles the properties. I haven't heard back from her. I should have asked my boss. He might have told me to just go get it and take it home. I figured that I needed to go through the proper channels. If I have to buy it, I don't want to pay a lot for it. It's not worth that much. Wish me luck.

Sunday, 1 February 2009

A friend of the family has started a website. It is called The American Gourmet. The recipe for hot wings is my brother in law's. Shelly would love for you to stop by and visit.
